events like the National Bike to Work Week, they can also serve as your ticket to a healthier and better
lifestyle. It’s no secret that millions of Americans are struggling to keep fit and stay healthy, but thanks
to the highly active community in Chapel Hill, locals have different and exciting ways to shed off excess
pounds and meet new friends at the same time.
The event will take place in May, but this early a number of locals have already hit the road on their bikes
every few days or so. Biking has regained popularity in recent times and if you are thinking about giving
it a try, I highly suggest that you gear yourself up suitably with the proper outfit and footwear for safety’s
sake. Arm yourself with a water bottle, too, because there’s always the risk of getting dehydrated when
biking outdoors.
This year’s event will start off from Chapel Hill and continue to Carrboro. Last year’s event culminated,
however, in our town and was quite a blast. The 2011 National Bike to Work Week had enough events
to fill everyone’s calendar. It started off with a Bike and Bus Workshop for loading and unloading bikes in
public stops and another workshop in which you could have your bikes inspected by professionals.
There was also a Bike Rodeo for kids 5 to 12 years of age while the penultimate event, the Cruiser &
Family Ride Wallace Deck kicked off with a cruiser ride around the town and followed by a night filled
with food, laughter, and the best live music in Chapel Hill. Best of all, there had even been an area
specifically designed for bike helmet decorating.
Finally, last year’s event ended with the Bike Ability Event for Youth and Adults with Special Needs. Giving
back to people with special needs in our community was a fitting end for a very wonderful week. There
were mascots to entertain the kids and even a delightful exhibit of adaptive bikes. A bike safety course
was also provided.
Overall, the whole week made quite an unforgettable memory worthy of cherishing, and I’m pretty sure
that 2012’s edition will be much the same – or even better. One thing’s for certain – if you have not
more reason to do so!
