Energy Star has created an on-line tool, called the Home Energy Yardstick, to assess your home’s energy use. All you need is the last 12 months of utility bills. If you don’t have these, they are easy to get on line. Once you know your score, you can use Energy Star resources to obtain guidance on enhancing your home’s energy efficiency.
Over the last few years, I installed a high efficiency, dual fuel furnace and a solar hot water heater. I was happy to see that my Yardstick Score is 9.3 out of 10. This is the household equivalent of driving one car. Not bad. I need to learn what I need to do to reach 10. I think my next step will be better insulation in my attic.
