Is Radon Present in Your North Carolina Home?

Testing your home for radon is easy and cheap, and it protects your family.

Have you considered testing your house for radon? If you plan on purchasing a property in North Carolina, we recommend it as part of your home inspection. Here’s what you need to know about radon testing when buying a home:

What is radon? It is a naturally occurring, colorless, radioactive gas in most soils and rocks. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Overall, it is the second leading cause of lung cancer and is responsible for about 21,000 deaths annually.

If a home in North Carolina has a radon level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher, it’s considered a problem and needs to be addressed. The EPA even recommends remediating it if the level is as low as 2 pCi/L.

“Radon testing is easy and inexpensive.”

Radon testing is easy and inexpensive. A test costs about $125, and remediation isn’t high either. If high radon levels are found, a vent pipe system with a fan must be installed. These systems can run between $1,800 and $3,500, depending on the house size.

Given the health risks associated with radon in homes, we highly recommend having your home tested as part of your due diligence process. If you have any questions about this or any other real estate matter, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or (919) 759-6359.
