The heart of the Triangle is home to Chapel Hill where there is no shortage of artists, musicians, and entertainment. The charming city is alive, beating with vibrant culture, interactive arts, and live, local music. Trips to this city mean incredible performing arts, some of the best food you can find, and world class performances.
Live & Local, Chapel Hill’s free Music and Arts Series, comes to the Plaza at 140 West Franklin Street. The ultimate gathering place, the Plaza is the perfect place wander through shops, grab some dinner, and enjoy the arts. For the past several spring and fall seasons , Live & Local has featured Chapel Hill’s newest music and artists. This year, Live & Local will return the Plaza for it’s sixth season!
The series will run on Friday evenings from April 7th all the way to May 19th. Each Friday evening festivities will run from 6PM to 9PM. A wide range of musicians will play on the stage, too. From American Folk music to Bluegrass, there’s a set list every family will enjoy. Music isn’t the only kind of performance, either. You might find your next favorite poet on stage, or a new performer you’ll love to watch.
Whether you’re watching from a lawn chair in the Plaza, from a restaurant patio, or your own terrace nearby, there’s something for everyone at Live & Local. Don’t worry about parking, either. The Plaza has a double decker parking deck so you can be sure you’ll get a spot.
Live & Local Starts Soon
“The Spring Fling” kicks off this season on this upcoming Friday, April 7th at 6PM. Don’t let the rain early this week keep you down. Friday’s forecast highlights a clear afternoon and evening which will let you discover Live & Local. Kick off spring in style where there’s fun for the whole family.
Not only will you catch a glimpse of the Plaza “Exhale” sculpture festively decorated for Easter, but you’ll catch sightings of a stilt walker. As if those attractions aren’t enough, the one and only Easter Bunny will be there to greet the kids.
Get some hands on spring holiday fun with seasonal crafts, balloon artists, and face painters at the Spring Fling. Don’t forget your game face, because there’s giant Jenga, tic-tac-toe, and corn-hole.

What’s exciting is that no two Live & Local events will be the same. Here’s a look at the upcoming events for this season:
April 21: Folk Music Medley
Celebrate Earth Day with this event. What a better way to celebrate our planet than enjoying a beautiful evening outdoors? The craft stations for this event will guide the little ones along in creating crafty pinwheels. Or, simply sit back and relax to the soothing sounds of Christiane Smedley, a local musician.
May 5: Bluegrass and Bike Week
Who doesn’t love a great jam band? Ellis Dyson & The Shambles will be showing their stuff on stage for Cinco de Mayo’s Live & Local event. The Shambles are a bluegrass band from Chapel Hill, so they’re sure to bring a lively crowd.
May 12: Cirque du Plaza
This event is a local favorite. Even though Live & Local creates new events each season, this was a must-have. Down to Earth Aerials bring aerial silk routines that will remind you of the famous Cirque du Soleil. To boost the event’s carnival feel, a face painter, balloon artist, and a local caricature artist will be wandering through the crowd. This night will be buzzing with energy.
May 19: Speaks & Beats II
Combining poetry, spoken word, music and more, Speaks & Beats II is a phenomenal way to end the series. Community members will have the floor to read the things they’ve been working on; there’s no better way to experience the Chapel Hill community.
Stay tuned for event updates, concert series, festivals and more.
