Over the last several years the Chapel Hill University Mall has gone through some major changes. The cornerstone of the mall, Southern Season, is still there but a large portion of the mall has been gutted and new stores are going in. When most people think of shopping malls in the Triangle area they think of Triangle Town Center, Streets of Southpoint and Crabtree Valley Mall. The University Mall in Chapel Hill would not be considered one of the “go to” destinations for shoppers. That may be changing soon with the area getting an entire overall.
The building that used to be Roses will soon be a Planet Fitness. Interestingly, the builders completely tore out the inside of the Roses and all that remains, in February 2015, is the structure of the building. Recently, Planet Fitness has mailed out grand opening discounts to residents of Chapel Hill and Orange County. One of the great things about Planet Fitness is its affordability. Students will likely be able to get monthly memberships for just $10 a month. If you are not a student, you will be able still be able to lock in the low rate of $10 if you sign up in the first few months of this particular location opening.
There are not many fitness facility options available in Chapel Hill. O2 Fitness is actually on the Durham County side of the line near Meadowmont off Highway 54. Students tend to use the UNC facilities but those that have graduated or have no affiliation with the university are limited when it comes to fitness options. There is an Orange Theory opening in Meadowmont and there is a Crossfit Chapel Hill gym but that pretty much sums it up for the gym options. If you have been reluctant to move to the University Mall area of Chapel Hill because of the lack of fitness facilities that is no longer a concern.
